Duluth Public School District (No. 709)

See the GoodBadUglyDistricts page for other districts. Please date your comments.

2005

We receive forms each year, including

1) the MN Compulsory Instruction Report,

2) the Student Report for Aids to Nonpublic Students,

3) a letter about reimbursement procedures,

4) a letter about health services offered to homeschoolers,

5) a letter about availability of standardized tests, and

6) a letter describing the above.

We also usually receive a letter in the spring “reminding us” to submit exam results. (reporting the results are NOT required by MN State Law) One year we received a phone call asking for the results; the person was quite conciliatory, and there were no further questions about not reporting results. There has been a person who has handled homeschooling reporting, I think mainly just doing the clerical work. Whenever I spoke with her, she was nice and seemed to be somewhat fearful of giving offense. She retired, and I have no experience with the new person.

In short, the Duluth district seems to be keeping records, but otherwise leaving homeschoolers alone. We haven’t tried to access any services within the district.

2006

I was up in Duluth this past week at the CORE Conference helping out run a session. The homeschoolers there seemed pretty happy about the district when I asked how they were treated.

It did sound like they provided those icky reporting forms, but just remember, you don’t have to use them!

They also said that their kids can access services easily. It also sounded like the area colleges were great regarding PSEO.

If you have any concerns with what the district asks for, use the MHA form, and contact MHA and a CORE representative. Also, read the laws for yourself! Then read them again!

CORE can be contacted by visiting their website at: http://www.northlandcore.org
